At the southernmost tip of Sardinia lies a small island, surrounded by the bigger islands of S. Pietro and S. Antioco: its  name  is  Isola Piana.

Its waters are blue and crystal-clear. At the sea-bottom, gardens of sea weeds float in a greenish light, among sea anaemones, and multicoloured  fishes. We are in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea.

The founding of the first feud on the Piana Island by the Marquees of Villamarina dates back to 1744. The old fishermen’s  village and the  tunny-fishing plant which were on the island(and which are now restored) belong   entirely to the owners, that, within a private and exclusive environment, have at their disposal quiet, silent, reserved  and relaxing surroundings.
The Piana Island, located in the middle of the Lagoon, forms part of  the “Sulcitano” Archipelago. It is a real oasis between sea and sky, where you can peacefully get in touch with nature, with an exceptionally fish-filled sea,  and gardens, meadows, and a park only for the owners  and tenants to enjoy.

Closeness  to S. Pietro  allows  to enjoy  the sandy beaches of this spectacular  and luxuriant  island .
On top of its hills one can spot a cut-off tower (called “La Guardia dei Mori”) made with big, squared rocks. In the past, long ago, guards used to stand sentinel on this tower night and day over the African Sea, in order  to  prevent pirates’ raids.
This is a land full of history. The king of Sardinia, Charles Emmanuel the 4th of Savoy,  conceded the island  of  San Pietro to a small community of Genoese

people who inhabited the island of Tabarca. Such island was located on the Northern Coast of Africa, near Biserta, that at the time was ceasessly threatened by the  pirates  of Barberia. The king of Sardinia convinced the inhabitants of Tabarca that it was better for them to leave the unsafe African  Island, by means of building for them a town that, in gratitude, took and still has the name of “Carloforte”.
This  town has been declared “Honorary Municipality” of the Province of Genoa  in 2004.
But this is not all there is about this place. You will have to be living here for a while, in order to fully  understand  and appreciate a world and a way of life that  are now disappearing.
Come see for  yourself.
